Kevin Mond, co-owner and vice president of HDR Remodeling, says this request tops the list of popular bathroom upgrades, driven by desires for privacy, hygiene, and a more luxurious atmosphere.

“This is not always possible, but clients always strive to have a toilet chamber where the toilet is separate from the main bathroom,” Mond explains. Whether achieved with a partial wall, a glass door, or a fully enclosed room, this layout is favored for its ability to make the bathroom feel more like a personal retreat. It also improves functionality, especially in households where multiple people use the same bathroom regularly.

Other Frequently Requested Upgrades

Beyond the toilet chamber, Mond notes four other renovations that consistently appear on homeowners’ wish lists. Additional storage is a common request, as custom cabinetry and shelving help keep the space clutter-free and reduce the need for storage elsewhere in the home. Heated floors are another popular choice, offering comfort during colder months and eliminating the need for noisy fans. Skylights are sought after for their ability to bring in natural light, and when roof installation isn’t feasible, high windows or frosted glass can achieve a similar effect. Heated towel racks round out the list, providing a touch of luxury while also serving a practical purpose.

Mond emphasizes that a successful bathroom remodel requires careful planning and a realistic budget. “It takes almost as many subcontractors to create a beautiful bathroom as a kitchen remodel,” he says. He recommends budgeting $80,000 to $100,000 or more to ensure quality workmanship that won’t lead to costly repairs in the near future. He also advises against having the same person handle demolition, waterproofing, tiling, and electrical work, stressing the importance of specialized tradespeople. “There are over one thousand decisions you have to make on a bathroom remodel, so it is important to work with a designer to lead you through these,” Mond adds.

Features to Avoid in a Modern Bathroom

In addition to popular upgrades, Mond points out several outdated features that homeowners should consider removing. These include heated bathroom fans, which are often noisy and less efficient than modern alternatives; pedestal sinks that offer no storage; non-tempered windows, which pose a safety risk; and fixtures with high gallons-per-minute (GPM) flow rates, which waste water and increase utility bills.

For those planning a renovation, the key is to prioritize features that align with both lifestyle and budget. While a separate toilet chamber may not be feasible in every layout, other upgrades like heated floors or skylights can still bring a spa-like feel to the space. As Mond notes, investing in quality materials and skilled labor is essential to avoid future problems.
