Interior Designers Share 46 Tips for Small Living Rooms
A small living room can be as functional and stylish as a large one, according to a collection of 46 tips from interior designers and home decor experts. The advice, compiled by The Spruce, covers furniture selection, layout, color, storage, decor, and lighting—all aimed at maximizing every square inch of a compact space.

Several designers emphasized color strategy. Gian Moore, former interior designer and partner at Mellowpine, said the primary rule is to keep all tones within the same palette to create flow. He recommended monochromatic and tonal hues. Richard Fung, owner of Forever Homes, warned that using different colors makes a room look divided and smaller, suggesting no more than two colors. Roman Ramona, founder of Living Beyond Design, noted that white and other light colors have higher reflectance, which can make a room seem larger by bouncing light around.

Lighting also plays a central role. Moore advised layering heights—a dimmable pendant overhead, ample lamplight, and wall lights. He said wall lights that direct soft shafts of light up and down can make a space look taller. Kate Diaz of Swanky Den suggested grouping sconces for a bold statement or positioning them over picture windows for a gallery effect.

Furniture choices can either crowd or open a room. Diaz recommended multipurpose pieces such as bookshelves near windows that double as window seats, or an upholstered ottoman that serves as both coffee table and seating. Jeneva Aaron of The House Wire stressed hanging cabinets and open-air coffee table storage to free up floor space. Ramona suggested furniture with legs—like a sofa raised off the ground—to create visual space. Heather Higgins of Higgins Design Studio noted that modular storage units just 15–18 inches deep require little floor space but provide copious storage.

Mirrors and natural light were recurring themes. Diaz said a mirror leading into the living room gives a light, airy feel. Another tip suggested hanging mirrors opposite windows to reflect natural light, or facing each other to create an infinity effect. Optimizing natural light with sheer curtains, clean windows, and clear sills also helps.

For decor, Diaz advised keeping artwork small and meaningful, and hanging it directly above the sofa rather than around the room. She also suggested using glass or porcelain vases for a clean look. Higgins emphasized balancing open, empty space with functional design. “Although it is tempting to try and use every square inch, maintaining a balance with open, empty space is key,” she said.

The full list includes 46 tips, from painting walls yellow to incorporating a bar cart or a standalone book tower. A companion FAQ addresses seating, decluttering, and maximizing space, recommending sectional sofas that fit the room, floor pillows for extra seating, and wall shelving to keep floors clear.
