Designers Say Take Down Halloween Decor by Nov. 1, but Fall Items Can Stay
Halloween may end on October 31, but the question of when to remove decorations depends on what you put up, according to two interior designers. For Halloween-specific items like skeletons, spider webs, and gravestones, the answer is clear: take them down on or shortly after November 1.

"When it comes to Halloween decorations, I recommend taking them down on or shortly after November 1," says Tami O'Malley, owner and lead designer at Tami O'Malley Design. Wendy Glaister, principal designer at Wendy Glaister Interiors, suggests going out first thing the morning after Halloween to remove the season's spooky elements. "No one wants to show up to Thanksgiving with a giant spider and web at the front door to greet them," Glaister says.

However, if your decorations lean toward pumpkins, gourds, mums, and hay bales, you can keep them up into November. "Pumpkin season is hard to resist and getting longevity out of your decor is important," Glaister says. She recommends decorating primarily with items that anyone would deem "fall," such as lanterns, branches, and scarecrows, which transition naturally from October to Thanksgiving.

To get more use from Halloween decor, O'Malley suggests focusing on neutral, autumnal tones like white pumpkins and leafy garlands that blend with Thanksgiving decor. For the transition to Christmas, O'Malley advises a thoughtful pause. "It's helpful to have a thoughtful transition period between Halloween and Christmas so that your home feels seasonally intentional, not rushed," she says. She recommends incorporating natural elements like branches and pinecones, and if bringing out Christmas items early, sticking to greenery with velvet ribbons in copper, brown, and rust tones. "Come December, you can swap in more festive ornaments and decor for a full holiday transformation," O'Malley says.
